Video King: Youtube vs Facebook

Video King

Two Social Platforms; One video king; Endless possibilities. Sounds like a movie trailer doesn’t it? Well it might as well become a movie because the battle between team Youtube and team Facebook is all but settled. Having been the video leader for a while now, Youtube management have a lot on their plate as Mark Zuckerberg is coming with a bang. In this article, we’ll compare the main differences between the two Social Media platforms when it comes to videos, throw in some numbers and announce the winner of the “Video King” title.

According to Ericsson‘s recent report “Video traffic to grow 55 percent per year until 2020, driven by video streaming services and increasing prevalence of video in online content.”

Views

Video views are crucial for every upload. First of all, views help in SEO and ranking the video higher for more potential views; and second, most people look at views even before they watch the video. They do so to get a quick glimpse into how popular and how good this video actually is. We might not judge a book by its cover, but we surely judge a video by its views. Facebook’s autoplay feature obviously helps a lot in increasing the numbers. As for how each of the platforms counts views: Facebook counts a view after 3 seconds of watching a video while Youtube’s algorithm is a bit more complex as seen in the video below:

Comments

If you’re as curious as we are, you probably scroll down and read the comments under a video. There are very different content in both platforms. Although people can mention and tag users in the comments boxes of each, Facebook has a sense of community that can not be found on Youtube. On Facebook, while watching Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a last minute goal, you mention your friend who’s a Real Madrid fan, he eventually watches the video and mentions another person creating this ripple effect that would lead it to go viral. Youtube however, lacks this and you’ll see a lot of arguments between users with endless negative vibes. While on Facebook you’ll have lots of love and friendly mentions, on Youtube an argument will rise between Messi fans and Ronaldo fans making the experience less pleasant. To end this point on a good note, check out this College Humor video about crossfit friends. While it gained 2 million views on Youtube, the same video has around 6 million views on Facebook.
