It was a busy year full of everything: the good, the bad and the ugly. In this article we’ll go through the most talked about events of 2014.

The Epic Selfie:

This year’s Oscars witnessed the “Golden Tweet” as named by Twitter. Ellen‘s selfie was the most tweeted tweet of the year with more than 3.3 million retweets. It simply broke the internet.

The Loss of a Comedy Legend:

Sadly, we said Goodbye to many iconic stars like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sabah, Said Akl and many others, but the event that left people from all over the world stunned, was the loss of the comedy Legend, Robin Williams.

The Cup:

Unsurprisingly, the World Cup was the most talked about sporting event of the year. Germany brought home the trophy in style after defeating Argentina in the final and humiliating the hosts, Brazil, in the semifinals with a 7-1 win.

The Vanished Plane:

On the 8th of March, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport, the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was reported missing. No trace was found and no reasonable explanation was given until this moment. The event was truly one that shook us all.

 

The New Season:

One of the most talked about events of 2014 was the release of Season 4 of the most anticipated TV series, Game of Thrones.

The Spread of a Virus:

2014 saw the outbreak of the Ebola disease in West Africa. It hit more than 18,000 victims and killed more than 6,000 of them. The spread was, to say the least, a huge tragedy.

The Challenge:

We witnessed the birth of the Ice Bucket Challenge to create awareness of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease. The challenge went viral and everyone took part in it.

The Deadly War:

The Gaza-Israel conflict in 2014 had to make the list as thousands of lives were either taken or destroyed.

As the year comes closer to an end, we look back on some of the most talked about events of 2014 with mixed feelings. The million dollar question remains however: What will 2015 hold for us?
