ARA: the idea, story and video

Sickle-cell anemia is a disease that touches many people from African descent. It can be cured by finding a match, via a bone marrow transplant. However too few people are registered in bone marrow registries, which makes the process of finding a match nearly impossible for people with the disease.

The Brief

We were approached by the NGO ARA to create a video to explain the situation, raise awareness and hopefully get people to register.

The Process

After reading about the disease, and learning more about the topic, we needed to develop an authentic illustration style, without falling into the typical “pathetic/charity” approach. The final result needed to be positive, show that we are hopeful and we can make a change. It also needed to encourage people to make a simple cheek swab. A common misconception people have is that they need to go through the bone marrow operation – which only happens if they match someone in need.

The Outcome

The result was a positive, impactful video that told an authentic story but also gave a suggestion for the solution.
