While Facebook’s serving 4 billion daily video views, Snapchat brings in 2 billion views a day and YouTube occupies millions of hours watched daily. However, almost all of the major social media platforms are jumping into the video game whether it’s Instagram,Twitter, Vine or tumblr, in this blog post we’ll compare 7 major social media platforms and the different factors that affect how videos work on each.

Views

On social sedia platforms, a view isn’t counted by watching the full video. Depending o the platform, views are counted differently. Youtube counts a view after 30 seconds of watching, while Facebook, Instagram,Twitter and tumblr need only 3 seconds, Snapchat counts a view directly on tap while Vine requires a full loop.

Auto-play

Does the video play automatically or should the user click on it for it to start? All platforms use the autoplay feature except Snapchat which requires a tap.

Auto-loop

Say you’re watching one of our explainer videos, does it keep on playing while you’re on the post? On Instagram, Vine and tumblr it does while the rest it doesn’t repeat.

Maximum length

What’s the maximum length allowed for videos on each of the social media platforms? 15 minutes on Youtube (11 hours if verified), 40 minutes for Facebook, 15 for Instagram, 30 for Twitter, Vines comes in with 6, 10 second clips on Snapchat, while tumblr has a 5 minute daily limit.

Embeddable

Can the video be embedded outside the social media platform? They can on all except for Snapchat.

Insight Dashboard

Which of the social media platforms offer metrics or insights dashboard to check the performance of the video? It’s actually only available for Youtube and Facebook while Vine and tumblr offer it for advertisers.
