Facebook GIFs: here at last

Facebook GIFsMark Zuckerberg and pal’s quest to make words as minimal as possible continues as the Social Media giant announced last week that it now supports animated GIFs. Forget the lousy old meme photos, you can now get creative and witty by creating Facebook GIFs to be shared with your friend.

What are GIFs?

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) are simply compressed files created to reduce transfer time. They can be created through a series of images or videos arranged to play automatically in a video-like format.

How Do Facebook GIFs work?

Just like the other social networks, you just add the link of the GIF to your status update and Facebook will automatically produce the animation. Keep in mind that pages (Facebook for Business) do not have access yet, but they will soon. Facebook GIFs won’t play automatically like automated videos; instead, a small “GIF” icon appears in the middle of the image to be played once pressed.

Why is that a smart move from Facebook?

  • For starters, GIFs are fun as heck and very easy to create.
  • Many other Social Networks support GIFs like Tumblr, Pinterest and Twitter leaving Facebook behind, something we’re not used to anymore.
  • Facebook GIFs help in increasing the reach and visibility as they are shareable and people love them.
