Animated Live Photos: iPhone 6S and 6S Plus

Animated live photos

We’ve already discussed Apple’s big event and the introduction of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus where we briefly mentioned the new “Live Photos” feature. Being Apple ninjas and big believers in moving images, we decided to dig deeper into the feature to examine the new addition.

What are Live Photos?

Think of it as a combination of automatic Gifs and animated short videos. Every time you take a photo with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the phone will automatically take it as “Live Photos”. “A still photo captures an instant frozen in time. With Live Photos, you can turn those instants into unforgettable living memories,” says Apple “At the heart of a Live Photo is a beautiful 12-megapixel photo. But together with that photo are the moments just before and after it was taken, captured with movement and sound.”

How Do Live Photos Work?

The iPhone’s 12 megapixel camera captures 1.5 seconds before and after the photo and when taped, the photo will become animated. Users will have the still image with the additional option to turn it into an animated short.

How Much Space Do Live Photos Take Up?

The new iPhones have a well upgraded camera with 12-megapixel sensor instead of the previous 8-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 6 that can record 4K videos. Needless to say, 4K videos take up a lot of space and live Photos take up twice the space of a regular photo. All in all, a 16GB iPhone might not be the best buy.

This is not an untapped idea; HTC have done something similar with it’s Zoe camera feature, and Windows lumia Camera, but Apple and Tim Cook are very good at what they do and take a “seen that done that” feature and turn it into something very special and unique in a new and improved device.
