Requesting the right formats for your videos

A common request we get from our clients at the end of a project is: “Can you send us the video in small format for the web please?”. While this would have been relevant many years ago, it no longer is the case. Allow us to give you some advice regarding that issue.

Video Formats

A great misconception our clients have is that they need to ask for their explainer videos in small format, as to not effect the quality or the buffering speed. However, all major players like YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo can adapt the quality of the video to the connection of the viewer. In this case, the best practice would be to upload the video in HD or full HD, so that your audience who have a high speed connection can fully enjoy the video, and the others with a slower connection can automatically watch it in a lower quality.

Video subtitles

Same thing applies for subtitles: Facebook and YouTube have the closed captions features which allows viewers to turn off the subtitles if they don’t need them, benefiting from a more visually appealing experience. For others who keep them, the subtitles will come in handy when using a video for people speaking different languages, when you want to make your Facebook video available to viewers with hearing problems, or when viewers cannot play the video with sound, in case they’re in a public space.

Keep in mind that including subtitles under these circumstances will certainly increase your engagement and also help with your reach and brand reputation.

There you have it, as simple as that. Don’t forget to check out more from our blog for an in depth look at the awesome world of explainer videos.
